Institute Director
The Institute for Global Justice & Security (IGJS) has a faculty director. The director is Robin N. Haarr, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice & Police Studies.
Dr. Robin Haarr earned her Ph.D. from Michigan State University’s School of Criminal Justice in 1995, and is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice & Police Studies at Eastern Kentucky University. Dr. Haarr is committed to action-oriented research and capacity building that promotes gender equality, women and child’s rights, and the reduction of violence against, and exploitation and human trafficking of men, women and children. She also has extensive experience working with on issues of policing/law enforcements.
Dr. Haarr has worked extensively throughout Asia and the former Soviet Union on the aforementioned issues. Dr. Haarr was a 2001-2002 US Fulbright Scholar in China, and a 2005-2006 IREX IARO Scholar in Tajikistan. Since 2002, Dr. Haarr has been a U.S. Speaker for the U.S. Department of State on issues of violence against women and children, and human trafficking and has worked with the U.S. Embassy’s in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao, Malaysia, India, and Pakistan. Since 2004, she has worked extensively as an international consultant to UNICEF, ILO, OSCE, US AID, and the Swiss Cooperation Office in various countries throughout Central Asia and the Caucasus. She also has significant experience working with in cooperation with governments, nongovernmental organizations, and victim advocacy groups.
Dr. Haarr has received numerous awards and recognitions for her scholarship and activism on issues of violence against women and children:
- 2007 – Inducted into the Wall of Fame at Michigan State University, School of Criminal Justice
- 2007 - Honorable recognition from the Senate of the Commonwealth of Kentucky for her scholarship and activism on violence against women and children throughout Asia and the former Soviet Union
- 2006 – Awarded the CoraMae Richie Mann “Inconvenient Woman of the Year” Award from the American Society of Criminology, Division on Women and Crime
- 2004 – Awarded the Outstanding Achievement & Contribution Award toward Advancing the Status of Women from the Arizona State University Commission on the Status of Women
